Chapter 2 and 3 Journal Posts

Focus Question 1
The latest research in the science of learning for teaching indicates that instead of having more emphasis on the “teacher-centered” concept, which was the traditional way of teaching back then and even to this day, why not invest that energy to a more open and exciting method for teaching such as the “student-centered” idea?

This link contains a wealth of information as well as engaging activities that encompasses the subject: math.  The many activities found on this website serve as a great tool to challenge and enrich students on the subject and making them more aware of the daily mathematical encounters they will have all throughout their lives.
Summary
This chapter truly captures the whole idea of teaching and the different approaches that we as future teachers may utilize in effort to better equip us to serve others, mainly students, in a greater way. Thanks to the many others who took the stand and realized that the need for growth was not simply just to talk or transfuse everything an individual knows to another, rather, it is engaging or enabling of others to figure out what is going on and why?, that makes the world of difference.  More simply, the text mentions the difference between teacher-centered methods vs. the student centered ones and the educational outcomes of those who learn passively rather than actively.

Focus Question 4
The text mentions a number of ways teachers evaluate and assess which include: learning assessments, standardized testing, performance assessments, norm-reference tests, criterion-reference tests, instructionally supportive assessments.  Depending on the type of testing, some students may be required to take the test/s before, during or after a lecture or whatever the test derive/s from.

Summary
This chapter covers many details as far as assessing and evaluating students, which can be beneficial in some instances, however, it can be a bit overwhelming for both the teachers as well as the students.  Teachers face many challenges already trying to find a way that will enable their students to excel when it comes to creating an educational plan that will cover many areas as oppose to just covering those that are already created to prepare students for tests.  Contrary to the many benefits of assessing and evaluating student’s progress, the text covers how there may be other factors such as socioeconomic

  1. Please be sure to have each chapter in its own individual post (identified in the title), rather than combining and include the actual question that you are answering in the focus question paragraph, so it is more relevant for the reader.

Some good observations regarding the impact of teacher- v. student-centered focus in education. As noted, there are many challenges in teaching today, including the 'attitude change' as we incorporate the new world! :)
